A clogged drain rarely happens because of a single mistake. More often, grease, hair, food scraps, soap residue, and other debris enter the plumbing a little at a time. The pipe gradually narrows until water begins draining slowly or stops moving altogether.
Many homeowners try to clear clogged drain lines only after water starts backing up. However, changing a few everyday habits can help prevent buildup before it turns into a recurring plumbing problem.
1. Pouring Grease Down the Kitchen Sink
Cooking grease may be liquid when it leaves the pan, but it cools and hardens as it moves through your plumbing. It can stick to the inside of the pipe, where it collects food particles, soap residue, and other debris.
Running hot water won’t solve the problem. The water eventually cools, allowing the grease to solidify farther down the drain, which may make it even harder to clear a clogged drain.
Instead, pour cooled grease into a disposable container, seal it, and place it in the trash. Before washing greasy cookware, wipe it with a paper towel. These small changes can reduce the sticky buildup that leads to kitchen sink clogs.
2. Using the Garbage Disposal as a Trash Can
A garbage disposal is not designed to handle everything left on your plate. Coffee grounds, eggshells, pasta, rice, potato peels, fibrous vegetables, bones, and fruit pits can clog the drain or damage the disposal.
Instead, scrape food into the trash or a compost container before rinsing dishes. When using the disposal, add small amounts of appropriate food waste and run cold water before, during, and for several seconds after grinding. Cold water helps keep residual fats firm so they can travel through the plumbing rather than coating the pipe.
3. Allowing Hair to Enter Bathroom Drains
Hair is one of the most common causes of clogged drains in the bathroom. Loose hair becomes tangled around drain components and combines with soap, shaving cream, skin oils, and other products.
At first, the shower or sink may simply drain more slowly. Eventually, the growing obstruction can leave standing water in the tub or cause the sink to stop draining. Use a hair catcher over shower and bathtub drains, and clean it regularly. Brush your hair before showering to remove loose strands, and place hair from brushes or razors in the trash rather than rinsing it into the sink.
These habits are especially helpful in busy Sun City households where the same bathroom fixtures may be used several times each day.
4. Flushing Items That Should Go in the Trash
Toilets are designed for human waste and toilet paper. Wipes, paper towels, cotton swabs, dental floss, tissues, feminine hygiene products, diapers, and similar items should be thrown away.
Even products labeled “flushable” may not break apart as quickly as toilet paper. They can become caught in a household drain line or combine with other debris to create a larger blockage. Some cities report having to spend thousands of dollars to repair sewer systems from damage from these wipes. They’ve even been banned in some countries.
If a toilet repeatedly clogs even when used correctly, the underlying problem may involve an obstruction, inadequate venting, or a damaged sewer line.
5. Repeatedly Using Chemical Drain Cleaners
When a drain slows down, many homeowners use a chemical cleaner. It may clear clogged drains, but using them repeatedly can damage your pipes. Chemical cleaners contain corrosive ingredients and generate heat. Depending on the product and plumbing material, they may damage pipes, seals, and fixtures.
They may also create only a small opening through the clog without removing the buildup that caused the clog. Water begins moving again temporarily, but the problem soon returns. You also need to avoid ever combining drain-cleaning chemicals. Mixing products can create dangerous fumes, heat, or splashing.

Recognize the Early Signs of a Drain Problem
Drain problems are easier to resolve before the pipe becomes completely blocked. Watch for:
- Water draining more slowly than usual
- Gurgling sounds from sinks, showers, or toilets
- Unpleasant odors coming from a drain
- Water backing up through another fixture
- Clogs that return shortly after being cleared
When several fixtures experience problems at the same time, the obstruction may be located in a shared drainpipe or the main sewer line. Treating one fixture won’t fix that larger problem.
